“Good decisions come from experience. Experience comes from bad decisons.”
Mark Twain
Hyenas aren’t dogs, but they don’t know that.
An unpopular opinion of mine is that Hyenas are the best wildlife southern Africa has to offer. Always running, playing, and well, acting like a dog. At the same time, the more popular lions, leopards, and cheetahs spend 95% of the day napping.
Rolling
A bird that looks like it came straight out of the world of Avatar, the Lilac-breasted roller is not an uncommon site in South Africa. The challenge is getting them to sit still long enough for a photo.
Dagga Boy
Old male Cape Buffalo that can no longer keep up with the herd form small solitary groups with other old males and are referred to as “Dagga boys.” Buffalo in general are considered the most dangerous animal in Africa by many of the guides I spoke with. And Dagga boys are the most dangerous of all the buffalo.
Wild Dog
One of the most endangered predators in Africa, the Wild Dog (aka Cape Hunting Dog, Painted Dog, African Wild Dog) is a rare site. Only around 6600 remain in the wild, so if you ever get the opportunity to see them, don’t wait any longer.
